This blackberry, pink and white Shibori marbled effect lampshade from Romor Designs is part of the “Constellation” collection recently launched at MADE London by Romor Designs. It is handmade using vintage French linen that has been carefully manipulated to form hundreds of tiny folds and ridges and then compressed and dyed to form the marbling pattern.
The dye distributes unevenly according to where it can find its way into the fabric creating a unique and unrepeatable pattern resembling a constellation in the night sky. Dyed using the natural dye, Brazilwood and then over-dyed with Mayan indigo. As with all my handmade fabrics, this is a one of a kind piece, no-one else will have one that is exactly the same.
* Please note: Due to the handmade nature of this item the exact pattern and colour you receive will be similar to but not exactly the same as the one you see featured.
Perfect in the lounge, bedroom or anywhere else you need a beautiful handmade lamp to illuminate your home.
Shibori is a slow craft and all my pieces require a number of processes such as stitching, binding or clamping, as well as dyeing using indigo and other natural dyes before being assembled into a lovely lampshade. After the Shibori marbling effect was applied to the linen it was mordanted in Alum overnight, left to dry for two days, dyed in a hot dye bath of Brazilwood for two hours and then dipped five times in Mayan indigo to achieve the rich pink and blackberry purple hues.
Inspired by the marbling you see on the covers of antique books this piece makes the most of the way the dyes spread unevenly through the carefully crumpled fabric. Inspired by Traditional Japanese Shibori patterns, Rob gives ancient techniques a modern twist and uses colour to bring a fresh perspective on lighting.
